Deux!! I mean, DO!
It’s time to get organized – and make it stay that way!
First, pick an area to work on. You don’t want to take on too much at once – things tend to go unfinished.
How about your closet?
First – Lock the door, turn up the music – you want to take out any disturbances while you get to work.
Take everything out of the closet - yes, everything. Vacuum, dust, get it clean in there.
We all seem to have the common problem of keeping things way too long – thinking they will eventually go back IN to style, or you’ll lose enough weight to fit in to them.
I say, if you have had it for over a year and haven’t worn it, get rid of it.
You could donate your old stuff, as most people do. Bring your bags to us and get a discount!
Or, do something different - host a clothing swap party with your girlfriends and have some fun. You could even take your clothes to a consignment place – more and more used clothing boutiques are popping up these days. Then, you could get store credit for new things or even cash.
Use your old t-shirts and socks for cleaning rags. If you’re good with a sewing machine, make tote bags out of the t-shirts. This is all for later, when you have finished organizing your closet, of course.
After you have gotten rid of your old clothes, what to do next?
Think about the structure of the closet – does it have the wire racks or even just a pole?
You should seriously consider getting custom closets done. This is where I plug our company, “Quality Wall Beds and More.”
The “More” stands for other things we do well, like custom closets! You can double your hanging space, add some drawers and make lots of extra room for all of your new clothes.. You should reward your self after taking on the huge challenge of cleaning your closet!
Plus, custom closets are great assets when you are ready to sell. If you rent, you might even be able to get some money back from your landlord for improving the space. You never know.
After you have our custom closets put in , the next step is fun.
Group your clothes by season, size, and then by color.
It’s an easy way to find what you need and an easy way to know where to put things back.
If you don’t need your winter clothes a majority of the time, consider storing them in bins under your bed.
Our closets are floor mounted, so you will always have a shelf for your shoes. If you are the next Imelda Marcos, you can add a shelf or even get an over the door shoe holder.
Toss out all the wire hangers, and replace them with plastic ones. Don’t hang any item that will get a fold in it from the hanger.
Try to keep doing this at least once a year, and pat yourself on the back for doing a great job!
